Character Information
Name: Stanford Pines
Canon Origin/Series: Gravity Falls
Why the hell is Stan even teaching children: Even among the wizarding world, a great deal of what is learned in ancient runes can be a great mystery to many. Stan enjoys telling long, elaborate tales about the oddities just like he does in his muggle gimmick shop. And while Stan isn't exactly a model adult, he throughly enjoys spending more time with a younger crowd of people than many people his age. They're a hell of a lot easier to get along with in his opinion, are more laid back and not nearly as afraid to speak their minds as people from his generation are.
Gender: Male
Age: 55
Blood status: half blood
Personality: Cannonly he's refereed to as "Grunkle Stan" by his niece and nephew, and for good reason at that! His humor is quite the snarky deadpan, and he is greedy and grumpy. He highly enjoys making jokes making fun of the things that others do. He is convinced all of jokes are completely hilarious and fantastic no matter what others have to say. If they're upset by it he usually just thinks that they need to "grow a pair" and get over it. He's a penny pincher to the extreme and hates spending money on things unless they're in his own best interest so he'll do whatever he can even if it means saving a few cents. One of the only times Stan isn't grumpy is when he's making money, even if it means he has to go through slightly unethical means of getting said money from other people. That being said, unless money is involved he has little interest in doing things that wont give him financial gain.
Despite all of his...questionable qualities he is a good person. Deep, deep down. He doesn't show his love in the most conventional way to his niece and nephew but he cares and wants to protect them in his own..odd and quirky way. He'd never do or ask anything of them that would put them in any real danger and he does enjoy the occasional fishing trip with them.
Background (AU!Canon; HP): Stan did fairly well when he was a student at Hogwarts. He understood the concept of money at a young age and while he was not fond of spending a lot of his time studying, he knew that better grades impressed employers, and impressed employers meant more jobs, which lead to money. A lot of subjects bored the hell out of him and he had little patience for very many things, so sometimes he’d..pull a few magical strings here and there to get his way with grades. As far as he was concerned, as long as none of the teachers knew what he was doing, it was perfectly legal.
He's spent a fair amount of time in both the muggle and wizarding world, and is well versed in the customs and traditions of both, especially considering he’s a halfblood. As an adult he spends the duration of the school year at Hogwart teaching Ancient Runes (the only class he ever genuinely enjoyed in school) and the breaks in the muggle world working at his gimmick shop. It’s a convienent schedule for him given that the Hogwarts school schedule matches up nicely with the schedule of the muggle schools. So the times he has off are the time he has the most customers at his shop. While he’s quite lax compared to many teachers, he is quick to catch students when they’re trying to play tricks. As someone who has played them his entire life and continues to do so even as an adult, he has seen and done pranks far beyond any troublemakers dream.
A couple of months before the summer that Mabel and Dipper both turned eleven, Stan was contacted by their dad as he was Stan’s nephew (making Mabel and Dipper his great niece and nephew). He and his wife were both muggles, however they were no fools and had started to notice that Mabel was…different. She was able to show signs of being capable in simple magic, and given that Dipper was her twin they figured he would also start showing signs of magical capabilities soon enough. Having no idea how to handle the situation of his two children being a witch and a wizard, he figured that Stan could lend them a hand. He had remembered when he was growing up hearing about his Uncle who had gone to a school for magic because he was different, as well as seeing him perform a few tricks at family reunions. Mabel and Dipper’s parents were not ashamed of their children in the least, but they wanted them to be with someone who would be able to explain the concept of the wizarding world in its entirety the best way possible.
Stan reluctantly agreed to let Mabel and Dipper visit him come that summer. He had never taken care of children before and while it was two extra mouths to feed, he couldn't say no to family. Over the summer he could clearly see that Mabel had magical talents, but wasn't too sure about what kind of wizard that Dipper would turn out to be. Mabel was a lot more outgoing than her brother and he would be able to frequently see her abilities but given that Dipper was a lot more a bookworm, he didn't get as many chances to view his magic. Stan had decided until both (or one of them) got their letter from Hogwarts, he wouldn't tell them about his magical background and tried to keep their visit as normal as possible. And while Dipper wasn't as big on magic, he was a very keen observer so Stan had to constantly keep an eye out to try and hide his magical past from his great nephew.
Both of them, did in fact receive letters from Hogwarts and it was then that Stan revealed his past to both of them, as well as reluctantly agreeing to take them school shopping but making sure to make clear to them they would get the most budget friendly items.
Being a teacher at the same school his great nephew and niece go to also makes both of their parents feel much more assured that they will do well in the wizarding world, so he updates them from time to time on their progress as well as occasionally helping out the kids in his own very special way.
